Week of October 10 and 17th
Last week we finished up some of our focus on vocabulary and moved to reading and listening activities. We watched "La invitacion," a Señor Wooly video about a boy who really likes a girl and asks her to go to several different places. We worked on describing the characters before (based on a reading) and after the video. We had an impromptu lesson on the present progressive!
I've introduced an activity to all of my classes that helped me a lot in college. I ask the students to look at a picture and for two minutes (without talking) describe what they see. They can invent a backstory or merely describe the photo's content. Then, for a whole minute, they must speak to a partner about the photo. They can't stop talking - in Spanish! This is absolutely a challenge but all of my students are capable! We're going to continue this through out the school year and by the end of the year, they'll be speaking champions. As a direct result of the activity, many of my students wanted to know how to say "they are eating," which is called the present progressive tense. We had an impromptu lesson on the present progressive and we'll continue to incorporate it next week.
This week, we will continue to write and speak all about ourselves and have fun with "police sketches."

Each level of the DHS world languages curriculum is guided by clear statements of what students will know and be able to do. Realistic expectations for how well students will be able to use their language and cultural skills are also clearly stated. These objectives determine what teachers teach, what practice activities are provided to students, and how student progress is evaluated. Ultimately, because the goal of learning language is to be able to use it, DHS teachers are expected to test and evaluate their students on what students can do with what they have learned.

Formative assessments 40 % (Includes homework assignments, class exercises, mini-quizzes, etc.).
Summative assessments 60 % (Includes at least 4 assessments per unit).
Participation is very important in a language course. Students will be urged to participate with RAP cards and other class rewards.
Homework: Practicing a foreign language is very important. Homework will be assigned occasionally, but I try to get the majority of work done in class. Often, students will need to bring work from class to finish at home. For homework that is checked for completion, students will receive a 100 or a 0. If it is completed late, they receive partial credit. If it is a homework that is checked for accuracy, similar rules apply, but more points may be docked for incorrect work.
Come to class on time, be in their seats when the bell rings, and wait to be dismissed before leaving the classroom. Class skipping and continual lateness will warrant a detention.
Obey the Electronics sign (this means that cell phones are only to be used in emergencies or as a classroom tool when authorized by the teacher). No phones are to be plugged into the school walls. Ever.
Students are expected to respect one another, the teacher, any visitors to the classroom, as well as the school itself. This means to respect others’ speaking time, thoughts, ideas, and physical space.
It is a student’s responsibility to check schoology, the website, talk to a fellow student, or come to me in order to make up missed work.
Students are held to the same expectations listed in the Student Success Guide. I hope to facilitate a better learning environment for every student; which involves cooperation of every classroom member. Students are also expected to maintain a sense of responsibility and integrity. Life is about choices. I hope to foster a positive environment with students who take responsibility for themselves and their actions, as well as maintain integrity throughout the school year.
